How to Double a Recipe
Doubling a recipe means multiplying every ingredient by 2. If the original recipe makes 4 servings, the doubled recipe makes 8 servings. Use the recipe converter below to double a full ingredient list automatically.
Double My RecipeQuick rule
To double a recipe, multiply each ingredient amount by 2.
- 1 cup → 2 cups
- 1/2 cup → 1 cup
- 1 tablespoon → 2 tablespoons
- 3/4 teaspoon → 1 1/2 teaspoons
- 2 eggs → 4 eggs
Ingredients to double carefully
- Salt
- Double it mathematically, but consider starting with 75–90% of the calculated amount and tasting before adding more.
- Spices
- Strong spices, chili powder, cayenne, and extracts can become overpowering when doubled.
- Leavening agents
- Baking powder, baking soda, and yeast usually scale, but very large batches can behave differently.
- Alcohol, vinegar, and citrus
- Double carefully and adjust to taste.
Does cooking time double too?
Usually, no. Doubling ingredients does not automatically double cooking time. If the food is spread across a larger pan at the same thickness, cooking time may stay close to the original. If the food is deeper or denser, it may need longer.
